What is Mel-Band RoFormer?

Mel-Band RoFormer is a Transformer architecture for music source separation. It groups audio frequencies into overlapping bands on the mel scale and estimates separate sound sources. Often written as MelBand RoFormer or Mel Band RoFormer, it is widely used for vocals and instrumental extraction.

The architecture is not limited to two stems. Common vocal weights separate vocals from accompaniment, while other trained weights target instruments or multiple stems. The outputs depend on the checkpoint: a vocal model cannot become a drum or four-stem model by changing a setting.

Acapellas for remixing

Isolate vocals to audition a remix or mashup. Check quiet syllables, harmonies, and any remaining instruments.

Karaoke and practice

Create an instrumental for singing or rehearsal. Listen for residual vocals, especially around reverberant choruses.

Music and video production

Prepare separate audio for editing. Use songs you own or have permission to process and reuse.

How to use MelBand RoFormer online

Open our Vocal Remover to use the existing upload, separation, preview, and download workflow. You do not need to install Python, download model weights, or configure CUDA.

  1. Upload your song

Open Vocal Remover and upload an MP3, WAV, FLAC, or OGG file. A clean source makes the result easier to assess.

  2. Start vocal separation

Use the vocal and instrumental workflow, choose your output format, and start processing. Your account limits and available credits apply.

  3. Preview and download

Listen to the vocals and instrumental in the browser. Download the tracks you need for practice, editing, or a permitted remix.

Basic separation can be tried with free daily credits. Longer tracks, larger uploads, and professional extraction depend on your credit pack and account limits.

MelBand RoFormer vs Demucs

Choose a specific model for the output you need. Architecture names alone do not determine sound quality or processing time; compare leakage and artifacts on your own track.

TaskMel-Band RoFormerDemucs v4
Vocals + instrumentalA common use for dedicated vocal and instrumental checkpoints.Supported by Demucs v4; two-stem mode still performs the full separation before combining outputs.
Multiple instrumentsRequires weights trained for the intended instruments or multiple outputs.Standard four-stem output: vocals, drums, bass, and other. A six-stem variant adds guitar and piano.
Quality and speedDepend on checkpoint, hardware, precision, and chunk overlap.Depend on model and settings. Official htdemucs_ft takes about four times as long as htdemucs.

How fast is MelBand RoFormer?

There is no universal processing time for a song. Model size, hardware, overlap, upload time, and the online queue all matter. More overlap repeats more computation. A two-stem output alone does not guarantee faster inference than a four-stem model.

MelBand RoFormer questions

Can I use MelBand RoFormer online without installing anything?

Yes. Our online audio separation workflow supports MelBand RoFormer. Open Vocal Remover to upload audio, run vocal separation, preview the results, and download tracks without setting up a local model.

Does MelBand RoFormer only support two stems?

No. The architecture supports different targets and multiple outputs. Common vocal checkpoints produce vocals and instrumental; other checkpoints serve different tasks. This page directs you to the vocal separation workflow.

Is MelBand RoFormer better than Demucs?

Dedicated MelBand vocal weights are strong candidates for vocal and instrumental separation. Demucs is a useful multi-stem baseline. Results depend on the weights and song: listen for bleed, missing voice details, and artifacts rather than assuming one model always wins.

Is online separation free?

Free daily credits are available for trying basic separation within account limits. Longer songs, larger files, and professional instrument extraction may require paid credits. Check the tool and pricing before starting.

Which audio formats can I upload?

The tool accepts MP3, WAV, FLAC, and OGG. Prefer the original or a high-quality source where possible: converting a compressed MP3 to WAV will not restore details already lost.
